I think there is nothing more useful, attractive, and perfect than a good built-in.
When we were finishing our basement I knew I wanted to include lots of them, but we got a little anxious to finish, so we only put in two units. I think someday we'll go back and add some more though. They are just so charming, and again, useful.
Here is built-in #1 in our playroom:
We chose those baskets first, and measured the shelves to fit the height and width of them. We left a larger space open at the bottom, because we knew there would always be toys too big for baskets.
The second built-in unit is in the guest bathroom, and is a little tricky to photograph. Both units are under the soffit, so they make good use of an otherwise funky space. The one in the bathroom provides great hidden storage since its tucked around the corner. The best part is, if we ever wanted to really hide the storage, all we'd have to do is add doors. Neither one has any extra frills, but I still think they add a lot to the space.
Now, go check this one out. Karla's built-in is AWESOME and inspiring. If only I had a place for one like hers:
